"FOTOSUB EL HIERRO": second DAY

(23/10/09) Our fotosub team tells us how they face a hard competition that is full of surprises and with uncertain ending. Currents, threaten of raining, low light… and excellent works as we can see in the images taken by the participants.

We have been surprised again this second day as two sites out from the sea “de Las Calmas” have been selected. One of them has another difficulty; current, predominant during the whole dive, and impossible to take shelter from it due to the orography.

During the training session, the weather has been idyllic. For group B, in which I am, it has been a luxury since we have had no current in either of the two dives. Group A  had current and had to hold on to the rocks at Punta Miradero. This morning I saw what they talk about.

Once in competition everything has changed. It was cloudy this morning and looked like it was going to rain, but in the end it hasn’t. Yoli and I decided not to go to Baja Bocarones until the next the of competition as it was going to be complicated with such low light. We have gone to Punta Miradero to take pictures of the environment, but it has been a mistake because the deep sea pulled you up from rocks and the current was too heavy. But we have another day, so, as the Spanish football team says, “after them”. Some photographers have told me that they have had a complicated day, but it is also true that we “moan” too much.

Despite the circumstances related above, there have been surprises again and the table has completely changed. In my short experience in competition, I think this one of the most uncertain “fotosubs” since now.

the dives:

BAJA BOCARONES

Like every dive from La Restinga, the access is from a ship. It is not always accessible because of being in the East, since prevailing NE trade winds ripple the sea and diving is uncomfortable. This dive is between a peak from 35 to 15 meters, to 70 meters far from the coastline. Normally, you anchor close to the coast, although for the open wew have been tied to the peak directly.

The best part of the dive is right in the peak, were we can find black coral from 30 meters deep. Also, there is a cave full with mackerels and black coral. They are used to run away when we shone the torch on them, although not much.

Up side is covered with fish: parrot fish, trumpet fish, triggerfish, mackerels, etc. Also a big grouper roams in the area.

PUNTA MIRADERO

We anchor near the coast, and once we are in the seabed, which starts in 8 meters and goes down to 30 or 40 meters,  we go down depending on what we want to do. All the way is an arenal covered with wrecks that fall in a point.  In this one we find two caves. There are a lot of mackerels in one of the.

Near the caves there is a crack full of black coral and a big grouper usually appears. Just over the caves there is an anemone that offers many possibilities, although it is not big. As we climb to the coast after retreat from the current, we can find interesting forms some few meters deep near the coast.
