Xacobeo: through Arousa and the Ulla

Xacobeo: through Arousa and the Ulla(Jose R. García / 25-05-10)  According to tradition, to move the corpse of St James through Galicia by sea after his martyrdom in Jerusalem, his disciples collected his decapitated body and took him across the Mediterranean and the Atlantic to Galicia.

They entered by the estuary of Arousa and ascended the river Ulla, thus reaching the roman city Iria Flavia. This transfer is commemorated every year in summer, organizing a river-sea procession through the Ría de Arousa, promoted by Ruta Xacobea del Mar de Arousa Foundation.

They are coasts rich in heritage. In both sides we can find numerous beaches and varied landscapes, wine and sailors villages, a wide offer of food and a good weather. There are countless tourist attractions on this route.

The route starts at the entrance of the estuary of Arousa, leaving to starboard Onza and Ons islands. The peninsula of O’Grove, A Toxa Island, Arousa Island, A Pobra do Caramiñal, Cambados, Vilagarcía, the Torres del Oeste of the time of Archbishop Xelmírez, or the confluence of the rivers Sar and Ulla, will delight any visitor.

In the church of Santiago de Padrón it is O Patrón, which according to tradition is the building where they tied the boat in which the Apostle came to Galicia. At the foot of the village, in Santiaguiño do Monte the headland where James preached rises. From Padrón, the route follows the route of the Camino.
