Water currents under the Antarctica

Water currents under the Antarctic(Ap / 28-04-10)  A recent study has shown that there is a cold and dense water current that runs under the sea platform of the Antarctica, over 3,000 meters deep, northward direction, according to the published in Nature this week.

Researchers of Hokkaido University (Japan) detected a strong current that travels Kerguelen, the underwater plateau with volcanic origin near the Antarctica.

The team, headed by Yasushi Fukamachi, used different kind of measurers, placed east of the plateau, to study during two years the deep current that flows north.

According to estimates, the current transport about 8 million cubic meters of water per second -with a temperature under 0.2ºC-, which is four times the volume registered in other Antarctic currents.

The newfound current is the most dense and deepest body of water of the world oceans, which are an important component of the climate system.
